Sony has acknowledged the issue and released a patch that fixes it. The company says it will be issuing another update to further address the problem.

Sony has released a fix for the ps4 slim cmos battery replacement issue. This problem prevented games from being played offline on the PlayStation 4.

In March, reports surfaced that the PlayStation 4 had a concerning problem wherein physical or digital games could not be played offline if the console’s internal CMOS battery died. This battery is critical since it powers the PS4’s internal clock, which must be verified and synced through PSN before a game can be played.

Sony has discreetly inserted a patch into its latest firmware update (v9.0) for PS4 consoles, according to Modern Vintage Gamer’s video. Eurogamer also verified that CMOS battery deaths should no longer be a major worry for PS4 owners who are concerned about keeping their system online or about the PlayStation Network shutting down in the future, making their games useless.

This battery drives an internal clock that the console employs to verify game ownership eligibility. Without a connection to the internet, both physical and digital games are rendered unusable without the battery – such as when it naturally empties.

Even while it is not listed in Sony’s official patch notes, reports this week indicated that the issue had been addressed in the v9.0 software update. Since then, our Digital Foundry team has been able to validate this and affirm that the issue has been resolved.

It’s unclear if Sony’s latest firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 5 contains comparable adjustments. The PS5 needs a functioning CMOS battery to boot digital games, according to a prior research published by Does It Play, although PS4 discs and certain PS5 discs still operate.

My date and time upon starting up my PS4 were 1969 and 5:00PM, which is the default date and time the PS4 uses when it has a dead battery, indicating that my battery is still dead.
