The Swiss government has legalized the use of 3D-printed suicide pods that can be activated by blinking. The new law, which allows people to die with dignity in their own homes instead of a hospital, is part of an effort to lower health care costs and increase quality of life for citizens.

The use of an unique but contentious device intended for assisted suicide has been allowed in Switzerland.
The Sarco is a 3D-printed suicide capsule with a futuristic design that purports to kill its occupants painlessly using nitrogen, according to Dr. Philip Nitschke, the founder of Exit International (a non-profit organization that advocates for voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide) who has earned the arguably appropriate nickname “Dr. Death.” The Sarco can be triggered just by blinking, which is one of the many unusual characteristics of the high-tech tomb. Users who lack movement may still be in full control of the procedure.
In an interview with swissinfo.ch over the weekend, Nitschke confirmed how the gadget worked:
It’s a 3-D printed capsule that the person who wants to die activates from the inside. For the death, the machine may be towed wherever. It might be in a beautiful natural location or on the grounds of an assisted suicide facility, for example.
The individual will enter the capsule and lay down. It’s incredibly relaxing. They will be given a series of questions, after which they will be able to click a button within the capsule to activate the mechanism at their leisure.
The capsule is resting on a piece of machinery that will quickly fill the inside with nitrogen, lowering the oxygen content to 1% from 21%. Before losing consciousness, the user will feel a bit bewildered and even euphoric. It takes roughly 30 seconds to complete the process. Hypoxia and hypocapnia, or oxygen and carbon dioxide deprivation, are the causes of death. There is no sense of fear or suffocating.
The installation of a virtual reality experience in 2018 added to the controversy around the Sarco, allowing visitors to witness the death capsule in operation. The pod has been criticized for glamorizing suicide, according to critics.
“Virtual reality allows individuals to experience their own virtual death,” said Dr. Nitschke. “This appeared to pique people’s attention.”
On the official Sarco website, a slogan states, “Go with style.”
